How to lose 10 pounds in a month, honestly

Ten pounds in 30 days is doable for some people, especially in month one. For others, 6 lb is the healthy win, and that's still a lot.

Is 10 lb in a month realistic?

Losing 10 pounds in a month is realistic for many people with a higher starting weight, because the first month includes water loss and bigger bodies burn more. For smaller or shorter people, 5 to 7 lb is a healthier first-month goal.

Ten pounds in 4 weeks is about 2.3 lb a week. Of that, perhaps 2 to 4 lb in the first week or two is water from stored carbohydrate.

Honest expectations protect your motivation. If you aim for 10 lb and lose 7, that's still a big, healthy result, not a miss.

The calorie math

To lose about 6 to 8 lb of fat in a month, you need a deficit of roughly 700 to 950 calories a day. Water loss can make up the rest.

Lighter, shorter people burn less, which is why their safe monthly loss is smaller.

A 4-week plan

  1. Week 1: set your calorie target, cut sugary drinks and alcohol, walk 20 minutes a day.
  2. Week 2: protein at every meal (see your protein floor), half your plate vegetables, add 2 strength sessions.
  3. Week 3: raise steps by 2,000 a day and prep lunches ahead.
  4. Week 4: keep it steady, sleep 7+ hours, and compare weekly averages in the weigh-in tracker.

Keep each week's habits going as you add the next week's.

A sample day around 1,850 calories

Here's how the 240 lb man from the table might eat on a typical day:

  • Breakfast: 3-egg omelet with spinach, 1 slice whole-grain toast and an orange (about 400)
  • Lunch: burrito bowl with 6 oz chicken, black beans, salsa, lettuce and 1/2 cup rice (about 600)
  • Snack: 1 cup cottage cheese with pineapple (about 250)
  • Dinner: 6 oz lean steak or salmon, a big pile of roasted vegetables and a small baked potato (about 600)

That's about 1,850 calories and roughly 150 g of protein, with plenty of food on the plate. For a different target, the 1,800-calorie macro chart and others like it give the grams.

Signs you're pushing too hard

  • Constant dizziness, headaches or feeling cold
  • Hair shedding a few months later
  • Missed periods
  • Thinking about food all day or bingeing at night

If you notice these, ease the deficit. Rapid weight loss can also raise gallstone risk. If you want help from a professional, a licensed clinician in your state can reach out.

Who should choose a slower month

Aiming for 10 lb in a month isn't a good fit if you:

  • Are already within about 15 lb of a healthy weight
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Take insulin or other medicines that can cause low blood sugar
  • Have a history of an eating disorder
  • Are an older adult, when protecting muscle comes first

For you, 4 to 6 lb a month is a strong, healthy result. It also leaves more room for food you enjoy, which makes it easier to keep going. If you're unsure, a quick chat with your doctor helps.

What comes after month one

Month two is usually slower, often 4 to 8 lb, because the water is gone and you burn a little less. That's normal. Keep going with the same habits and read how much you can lose in a month.

A good month-two plan is to keep your calorie target, add a little more movement and recheck your numbers once you've lost 10 lb. If month two brings 5 lb, you're right on track. Over 3 months, many people with a higher starting weight reach a 15 to 20 lb loss this way.

Foods that make the month easier

The easiest month is one where you're rarely hungry. Lean on foods that are filling for their calories:

  • Protein: eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, chicken, fish, tofu, lentils
  • Volume: salads, soups, berries, watermelon, cucumbers, broccoli. See high-volume foods
  • Fiber-rich carbs: oats, beans, potatoes with skin, whole grains

Go easy on liquid calories, fried foods, pastries and large handfuls of nuts. A high-protein breakfast often sets up the whole day.

Common questions
