The honest answer
For most people, losing 15 pounds in one month is faster than recommended. It works out to about 3.5 lb a week, while the CDC's healthy pace is 1 to 2 lb. People starting at a high weight, or on a medically supervised plan, may lose close to 15 lb in their first month, partly from water.
A safer goal is 15 lb in 6 to 10 weeks. See the full 15 lb timeline.
That doesn't mean you can't make great progress this month. A healthy 6 to 10 lb in month one is a strong start toward 15 lb, and it's far easier to keep.
Why it's so hard
If 3 to 4 lb of month one is water, the remaining 11 to 12 lb of fat needs about 40,000 calories of deficit, or roughly 1,350 a day. A lightly active woman at 5 ft 4 in and 200 lb burns about 2,148 calories, so she'd need to eat around 800. That's a very low calorie diet, which the NIDDK says should be done only with a doctor.
A man at 300 lb and 6 ft burns about 3,200 calories on a light day, so the same goal is closer to reachable for him. Your number is in the TDEE calculator.
Bigger daily burns make bigger safe deficits possible, which is why size matters so much here.
Risks of going too fast
- Losing more muscle along with fat
- Higher gallstone risk with rapid loss
- Fatigue, dizziness, headaches and constipation
- Strong rebound hunger and regain
If you're considering a very fast plan for a medical reason, do it with a clinician. We can help a licensed clinician in your state reach out.
What a supervised fast plan involves
When a doctor recommends rapid weight loss, for example before surgery, it usually looks very different from a do-it-yourself crash diet. A medically supervised plan may include:
- Meal replacement shakes or bars designed to cover protein, vitamins and minerals
- Regular check-ins and blood tests
- Adjusting medicines for blood pressure or diabetes as weight drops
- A planned step back to regular food
The NIDDK notes that very low calorie diets, about 800 calories a day or less, should only be used with a doctor's supervision. If you think you need one, ask your doctor rather than trying it alone.
Who should skip the fast route
Please don't chase 15 lb in a month if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, have had gallstones, take insulin, or have a history of an eating disorder.
If food thoughts or body worries take up much of your day, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. You deserve support, not a harder diet.
A faster, safer plan
- Set a deficit of 750 to 1,000 calories with the deficit calculator, staying above the 1,200 or 1,500 floor.
- Eat 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kg. At 200 lb that's about 109 to 145 g; see protein at 200 lb.
- Walk 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.
- Lift 2 to 3 times a week.
- Sleep 7+ hours and keep alcohol low.
Most people following this lose 8 to 10 lb in month one and reach 15 lb in about 6 to 8 weeks.
A 6 to 8 week path
| Weeks | Focus | Typical loss |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Set your target, cut sugary drinks and alcohol, walk daily | About 4 to 6 lb, part water |
| 3 to 4 | Protein at every meal, 2 strength sessions a week | About 3 to 4 lb |
| 5 to 6 | Add 2,000 steps a day, prep lunches | About 3 to 4 lb |
| 7 to 8 | Recheck your calorie target, keep sleep steady | About 2 to 4 lb |
That adds up to roughly 12 to 18 lb over 8 weeks for many people with a 750 to 1,000 calorie deficit. Smaller bodies will land at the lower end. Check your own pace in the calorie deficit calculator.
When medicine helps
For people who meet the label criteria, prescription GLP-1 medicines produced average losses of about 15% to 21% over 68 to 72 weeks in their main trials. Even so, loss is gradual. Explore the GLP-1 projection.
These medicines are for people who meet label criteria, and they come with side effects like nausea and constipation. They aren't a shortcut for a one-month goal. If you think you may qualify, read who qualifies for a GLP-1 and talk with a clinician.

Common questions
Can you lose 15 pounds in a month?
It's possible for some people with a high starting weight or on a supervised plan, but it's faster than the 1 to 2 lb a week most experts recommend.
How many calories should I eat to lose 15 pounds in a month?
For many people it would mean eating under 1,000 calories a day, which needs medical supervision. A safer target is 750 to 1,000 below your TDEE.
How long does it really take to lose 15 pounds?
About 6 to 10 weeks at a healthy pace for most people.
Is it dangerous to lose 15 pounds in a month?
It can be risky without supervision because of muscle loss, gallstones and nutrient gaps. Talk to a doctor first.
