Pace calculator

Doubling your race distance usually costs more than double the time, about 2.1 times, which is why marathon goal paces feel slower than 10K paces.

Updated

How to use it

  1. Step 1Pick a distance (1 mile, 5K, 10K, half, marathon) or enter custom miles.
  2. Step 2Enter your finish time in hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. Step 3Read your pace, speed, splits and predicted times for other races.

Pace and splits

Pace = time ÷ distance. A 30-minute 5K (3.107 miles) is 9:39 per mile, or 6:00 per km. Splits multiply that pace by each mile.

Race predictions

Predictions use Riegel's formula: T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06. It assumes you've trained for the longer distance. For beginners, marathon predictions from short races are often too fast.

Common questions

What is a good 5K time?

It varies with age and experience. Many recreational runners finish between 25 and 40 minutes.

How do I convert pace per mile to pace per km?

Divide your mile pace by 1.609. A 10:00 mile is about 6:13 per km.

How accurate are race time predictions?

They're a reasonable guide if you've trained for the longer race. Heat, hills and fueling can change the result.

What pace is zone 2?

Zone 2 is set by heart rate, not pace. Use the heart rate zone calculator, then find the pace that keeps you there.
