Can acupuncture help with weight loss

Some small trials report a few extra pounds lost with acupuncture, but most are low quality, so the honest answer is "maybe, a little".

How it's supposed to help

Short answer: maybe, a little. Some trials report a couple of extra pounds lost with acupuncture, but the studies are mostly low quality, so it's best treated as an optional add-on to everyday habits.

Acupuncture uses thin needles at specific points. For weight, practitioners often target points on the body or ear, with the goal of reducing appetite or stress. Ear acupressure seeds are a common add-on.

What the research says

Pooled analyses of acupuncture trials for obesity suggest small extra losses, often a couple of pounds, compared with control groups. But many trials are small, short and hard to blind, which makes the results less reliable. The NIH's integrative health center calls the evidence limited.

Why these studies are tricky

It's hard to give someone fake acupuncture without them noticing. Researchers use "sham" needles that don't pierce the skin, or needles placed at random points, but people often still respond.

Expectation and the calm of a weekly appointment can change how people eat and feel. That's real, but it's a placebo-type effect rather than proof that the needle points themselves cause weight loss.

Safety with a licensed practitioner

  • Choose a licensed practitioner who uses sterile, single-use needles.
  • Minor soreness or bruising can happen.
  • Tell them if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder or a pacemaker (for electroacupuncture), or are pregnant.

Licensing rules vary by state. Many states require national certification from the NCCAOM, and some medical doctors also train in acupuncture. Before you book, ask about their training, how many sessions they suggest and the total cost.

How to use it well

If you enjoy acupuncture and it helps you feel calmer, it can be a supportive extra. Pair it with the basics that drive results: a calorie target you can keep, protein at meals and more movement.

A simple way to start: add a 15-minute walk on the days you have a session, then build from there. The steps-to-miles calculator shows how far your daily steps take you, and the walking for weight loss guide has an easy plan.

Ear seeds and acupressure at home

Ear seeds are tiny seeds or metal beads taped to points on the ear, which you press during the day. They're low risk, though the tape can irritate skin. Take them off if your ear gets sore or red.

The evidence for weight loss is just as limited as for needles. If pressing them reminds you to pause before a snack, that pause may be the useful part.

What a session is like

A typical visit starts with questions about your health, sleep and eating. Thin needles go in at several points and stay for about 15 to 30 minutes while you rest. Most people feel little more than a brief pinch, and many find it relaxing. You may feel a dull ache or tingling at a point; tell them if anything actually hurts. For weight goals, practitioners may suggest weekly sessions for a couple of months.

If cost is a concern, check whether your plan or HSA covers acupuncture. Some plans cover it for certain conditions.

When to talk to your doctor

  • Before you start, if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, have a pacemaker or are pregnant.
  • If you feel faint or dizzy during or after a session.
  • If a needle spot turns red, warm, swollen or painful, or you get a fever, which can signal infection.
  • If you're hoping for larger weight loss. Your doctor can talk through options with stronger evidence.

Common questions

Does acupuncture work for weight loss?

Some small trials suggest a little extra loss, but the evidence is low quality. It works best as an add-on to diet and activity changes.

How many acupuncture sessions for weight loss?

Trials often used weekly sessions for 6 to 12 weeks. There's no proven ideal number.

Is acupuncture safe?

It's generally safe with a licensed practitioner using sterile needles. Tell them about blood thinners or pregnancy.
