What B12 does in your body
Short answer: B12 doesn't cause weight loss when your levels are normal. If you're low, fixing it can ease tiredness so moving and cooking feel doable again, and that's where the real benefit lies.
Vitamin B12 helps make red blood cells, keeps nerves healthy and helps your body use energy from food. It doesn't speed up fat burning in people with normal levels.
Most adults get enough from meat, fish, eggs, dairy or fortified foods. The adult recommended amount is small, about 2.4 micrograms a day.
What the research says
There are no solid trials showing that B12 shots or pills cause weight loss in people with normal levels. Some studies link low B12 with higher body weight, but that doesn't mean B12 causes weight change. It may simply reflect diet.
Where B12 can genuinely help is deficiency. Low B12 can cause tiredness, weakness and tingling. Correcting it can make you feel better and more able to move, which supports weight loss indirectly.
Who might be low
- People taking metformin for a long time, which can lower B12 absorption
- Adults over 50, who absorb less B12 from food
- People who eat a vegan diet without fortified foods or a supplement
- People who've had weight-loss surgery or have certain stomach or gut conditions
- People on long-term acid-reducing medicines
A simple blood test can check your level. If you take metformin, see metformin and weight loss.
Signs you might be low
- Tiredness or weakness that doesn't lift with rest
- Pale skin or shortness of breath with mild effort
- Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, or trouble with balance
- Memory trouble, low mood or a sore, smooth tongue
These signs overlap with many other conditions, so a blood test beats guessing. High intakes of folic acid can hide some of the blood signs of low B12 while nerve problems continue, which is one more reason to test instead of self-treating.
Easy food sources of B12
| Food | Approximate B12 | Share of 2.4 mcg |
|---|---|---|
| Salmon, cooked, 3 oz | about 2.6 mcg | about 100% |
| Canned light tuna, 3 oz | about 2.5 mcg | about 100% |
| Lean ground beef, cooked, 3 oz | about 2.4 mcg | about 100% |
| Milk, 1 cup | about 1.3 mcg | about 50% |
| Egg, 1 large | about 0.5 mcg | about 20% |
Values are approximate, from the NIH B12 fact sheet. Fortified cereals and fortified nutritional yeast vary a lot, so check the label. Eggs pull double duty with protein too: are eggs good for weight loss.
Are B12 shots safe
B12 is generally considered safe because your body clears extra in urine. No upper limit has been set, since harm from too much is rare. The bigger issue is cost: paying for regular shots you don't need, sometimes bundled with weight-loss programs. Pills work for most people with mild deficiency, while shots are for people who can't absorb B12 well.
Some clinics sell "lipo" or "lipotropic" shots that mix B12 with other ingredients. Those blends haven't been shown to cause fat loss. If you get any shots, tell your regular clinician what's in them.
Questions to ask your clinician
- Should I have my B12 checked, and how often?
- Do any of my medicines lower B12?
- If I'm low, are pills enough, or do I need shots?
- When should we recheck after I start treatment?
B12 when you're eating less
On a GLP-1 medicine or a big calorie cut, food variety often shrinks. That can make gaps in B12, iron, vitamin D and calcium more likely over time, especially if meat, eggs and dairy drop off your plate.
A simple multivitamin or a quick blood test is usually a smarter first step than regular shots. Building meals around protein covers a lot of B12 too: what to eat on a GLP-1.
Better bets
The habits with the strongest evidence aren't flashy, but they work and they stack:
- A modest calorie deficit you can live with: find yours.
- Protein at every meal to protect muscle: your protein floor.
- More daily movement, starting with steps: the best exercise for weight loss.
- Sleep and stress care, which make every other habit easier.
- If you have obesity or a weight-related condition, FDA-approved medicines have real trial data: see how they compare.

Common questions
Do B12 shots help you lose weight?
Not on their own. There's no good evidence B12 causes weight loss unless you were deficient and the fatigue was holding you back.
Can low B12 cause weight gain?
Low B12 can cause fatigue that makes activity harder, but it isn't an established cause of weight gain.
How do I know if I'm low in B12?
A blood test can tell you. Ask your clinician, especially if you take metformin, are over 50 or eat a vegan diet.
Do lipotropic or lipo B12 shots burn fat?
There's no good evidence they do. They mix B12 with other ingredients, and those blends haven't been shown to cause fat loss.
