The honest answer
Losing 10 pounds in 2 weeks is unlikely for most people, but possible for some with a higher starting weight, mostly through water loss in the first week. For many people, 4 to 8 lb in 2 weeks is the realistic and healthy range.
Your starting weight, height and activity matter most. The bigger your daily burn, the faster your safe pace.
The math, step by step
If 3 to 4 lb is water, the other 6 to 7 lb of fat needs a deficit of roughly 21,000 to 24,500 calories, or about 1,500 to 1,750 a day. Most people can't reach that safely while staying above 1,200 (women) or 1,500 (men) calories.
Example: a man at 6 ft and 300 lb burns about 3,200 calories on a lightly active day. Eating 1,700 and walking a lot could get him near 10 lb in 2 weeks. A woman at 5 ft 4 in and 170 lb burns about 1,960, so her safe 2-week range is closer to 3 to 5 lb. Find your own in the TDEE calculator.
These numbers are estimates based on standard equations, so your own burn may be a bit higher or lower.
A safe 2-week push
- A 750 to 1,000 calorie deficit from the deficit calculator
- Protein at every meal: see your protein floor
- Low salt, no alcohol, no sugary drinks for 14 days
- Walk 8,000 to 12,000 steps a day
- Two to three strength sessions a week
- Seven or more hours of sleep
Pick the 2 or 3 habits you'll keep longest, since they matter more than these 14 days.
A sample day for a big push
Here's a filling day of about 1,650 calories for the 300 lb man in our example. It's high in protein and fiber, so hunger stays manageable.
- Breakfast: 2 eggs plus egg whites scrambled with peppers, and 1 slice whole-grain toast (about 300)
- Lunch: large salad with 6 oz grilled chicken, chickpeas and a light vinaigrette (about 500)
- Snack: a protein shake made with water, plus an apple (about 250)
- Dinner: 6 oz white fish, a big bowl of roasted broccoli and cauliflower, and a small sweet potato (about 550)
- Evening: herbal tea or a sugar-free hot cocoa (about 50)
That's roughly 150 g of protein. A smaller person would scale portions down while staying above the 1,200 or 1,500 floor. The macro calculator gives your own grams.
Shortcuts that backfire
- Laxatives and detox teas lose water and electrolytes, not fat. See why laxatives don't work.
- Diuretic pills without a prescription can be dangerous.
- Starvation plans cost muscle and raise gallstone risk.
If you need to lose weight quickly before surgery or for another medical reason, ask your doctor about a supervised plan. A licensed clinician in your state can reach out if you'd like.
Keep the 10 lb goal
Ten pounds is a wonderful goal; give it 5 to 10 weeks. Check the 10 lb timeline and enjoy the early wins along the way.
Here's a kinder plan: aim for 4 to 6 lb in the first 2 weeks, then 1 to 2 lb a week after that. Most people reach 10 lb in about 5 to 7 weeks this way, keep more muscle and feel far better. And because the habits are livable, the weight is more likely to stay off.
What a good 2-week result looks like
| Starting weight | Realistic 2 weeks | Of which water, roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 160 lb | 3 to 5 lb | 1 to 2 lb |
| 200 lb | 4 to 7 lb | 2 to 3 lb |
| 260 lb | 6 to 9 lb | 2 to 4 lb |
| 320 lb | 7 to 10 lb | 3 to 5 lb |
These are rough estimates with a steady 750 to 1,000 calorie deficit, not promises. Your body, hormones and salt intake can shift them. See your own pace with the deficit calculator.
Why some of it may come back
If you do get close to 10 lb in 2 weeks, expect a small bounce when you eat more normally again. Glycogen refills with carbs and brings water back with it, often 1 to 3 lb within a few days. That's not fat regain.
To protect the fat loss, move to a steadier 1 to 2 lb a week instead of stopping cold. Keep protein high, keep walking, and weigh a few times a week. Looking at the average in the weigh-in tracker keeps a normal water bounce from knocking your confidence.
