Lemon balm tea for weight loss

Lemon balm went viral as a weight-loss drink, but its human research is about calm and sleep, not fat loss.

How people make it

Short answer: lemon balm tea is easy to make and pleasant to drink, but there's no good human evidence it causes weight loss. Its real value is as a calming, calorie-free drink.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a lemon-scented herb in the mint family. The viral recipe is simple:

  1. Steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaves, or a small handful of fresh leaves, in a cup of hot water.
  2. Cover and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Strain, then drink warm or over ice. Some add lemon or a little honey.

For iced tea, brew a double-strength pot, let it cool, and pour it over a full glass of ice. Tea bags work fine if you can't find loose leaves. If you grow it, keep it in a pot: like other mints, it spreads fast.

What the research says

Weight-loss claims come mostly from animal studies. In people, small studies have looked at mild anxiety, stress and sleep, with modest results. There are no good human trials showing lemon balm causes weight loss.

Most of those human studies used capsules or extracts rather than tea, often mixed with other herbs like valerian, for a few weeks at a time. So even the calm and sleep benefits are best seen as possible, not proven.

There's a small, real upside: if a cup of lemon balm tea replaces a soda or a sweet coffee drink, you save calories. That's the drink swap doing the work, not the herb.

Safety to know

  • It's generally well tolerated as a tea in normal amounts.
  • It can cause drowsiness and may add to the effect of sedatives or sleep medicines.
  • People with thyroid conditions should ask first, since lab studies suggest it may affect thyroid hormone.
  • Safety in pregnancy isn't well studied.
  • Because it can cause sleepiness, it's usually advised to stop it about 2 weeks before a planned surgery.

Make your drinks work for you

Swapping sugary drinks is one of the easiest calorie wins. Here's what a swap can look like:

DrinkApproximate calories
Cola, 12 oz canabout 150
Sweet tea, 12 ozabout 120 to 140
Sweetened coffee drink, 16 ozoften 200 or more
Lemon balm tea, unsweetenedabout 2
Lemon balm tea with 1 tsp honeyabout 22

Swapping one can of soda a day for unsweetened tea saves about 150 calories, or roughly 1,050 a week. Pair it with plenty of water: how water helps weight loss and your daily water target.

Common mistakes with herbal teas

  • Stirring in lots of honey or sugar, which turns a calorie-free drink into a sweet one.
  • Buying "detox" or "slimming" blends. Many contain senna, a laxative that drops water, not fat: why laxatives don't cause weight loss.
  • Expecting the tea to cancel out a big meal. It can't, and that's okay. It's a nice habit, not a fix.
  • Drinking several strong cups late at night if it makes you groggy the next morning.

A simple evening tea routine

If evenings are when snacking creeps in, a warm drink can mark the end of the eating day. Brew a mug after dinner, sit somewhere comfortable, and take 10 minutes away from screens.

It won't fix hunger if you under-ate earlier, so make sure dinner had enough protein and fiber. If nighttime eating is tied to stress or feelings, this gentle guide to emotional eating may help.

Other teas people try

Green tea has the most research of the popular teas, with small effects at best: green tea and weight loss. Peppermint and ginger teas are favorites for settling the stomach, which some people on GLP-1 medicines find helpful for mild nausea. None of them replace a calorie deficit, but an unsweetened warm drink can be a lovely evening ritual instead of a snack.
