Weight loss basics

How much weight can you lose in a week?

Your body can only burn so much fat in 7 days, about 1 to 2 lb for most people. Anything bigger on the scale is mostly water, and that's OK.

The safe weekly range

Most people can lose about 1 to 2 lb of fat a week safely. In your very first week, the scale may show 2 to 5 lb because you also lose water stored with carbohydrate. The CDC uses 1 to 2 lb a week as a healthy pace.

Put another way, a healthy week is about 0.5% to 1% of your body weight. At 160 lb that's 0.8 to 1.6 lb; at 260 lb it's 1.3 to 2.6 lb. Bigger bodies can lose more per week and smaller bodies less, and both are on track. See a healthy weight loss rate for the full table.

The math behind a week

A pound of body fat holds roughly 3,500 calories. To lose 1 lb a week, you'd need a deficit of about 500 calories a day. Two pounds needs about 1,000 a day.

Example: a lightly active man, 40, at 5 ft 10 in and 240 lb burns about 2,757 calories a day. Eating 1,750 gives a 1,000-calorie gap, about 2 lb a week. A 5 ft 4 in woman at 160 lb burns about 1,900, so a 2 lb week would push her under 1,200 calories. Her safe pace is closer to 1 lb. Find yours in the TDEE calculator.

Remember, these are estimates, so your real results may vary a little either way.

Why the scale lies a little

  • A salty dinner can add 1 to 3 lb of water overnight.
  • A hard workout can hold water in muscles for a few days.
  • The menstrual cycle can shift weight by several pounds.
  • Constipation and timing change the number too.

Weigh at the same time, then compare weekly averages in the weigh-in tracker.

If your average is moving down over 3 to 4 weeks, your plan is working, even if a single week looks flat.

What about 5 lb a week?

Possibly in week one, mostly from water, especially with more weight to lose. After that, 5 lb of fat in a week would require a deficit of about 2,500 calories a day, which isn't safe for most people. Read the honest 5 lb plan.

If you see a 5 lb drop later on, look at your recent days. A stomach bug, a hot week with lots of sweating or a big cut in salt can all cause it, and it usually evens out within a week.

Make your week count

  1. Set a 500 to 1,000 calorie deficit with the deficit calculator.
  2. Eat protein at every meal: see your protein floor.
  3. Walk daily; 8,000 steps is about 3.5 to 4 miles.
  4. Sleep 7+ hours and drink water.

A simple weekly check-in

Pick one day a week for a 5-minute check-in:

  1. Look at your weekly average weight, not today's number.
  2. Ask: did I hit my protein most days? Did I walk?
  3. Note one non-scale win, like better sleep or an easier staircase.
  4. Choose one small focus for next week.

If the average hasn't moved for 3 weeks in a row, that's a signal to adjust, not to quit. Small tweaks of 100 to 200 calories or an extra daily walk are usually enough. Read why you might not be losing weight if you're stuck.

When fast weekly loss is a warning

Big drops after the first couple of weeks are worth a second look. Talk to your doctor if:

  • You're losing weight without trying
  • You keep losing more than 2 to 3 lb a week for a month or longer, outside a supervised plan
  • You have vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst or frequent urination
  • You feel dizzy, faint or unusually tired

Unplanned weight loss can be a sign of a thyroid problem, diabetes or another condition, so it deserves a check. On a GLP-1 medicine, tell your prescriber if you can barely eat or drink. See dehydration on a GLP-1.

Common questions

How many pounds can you lose in a week?

About 1 to 2 lb of fat for most people. The first week can show more because of water loss.

Is losing 3 pounds a week too much?

It's common in the first week or two, especially at higher weights. Over many weeks, 1 to 2 lb is the safer pace.

How many calories do I need to cut to lose 2 pounds a week?

About 1,000 a day below your TDEE, while staying above 1,200 (women) or 1,500 (men) calories.

Why did I gain weight overnight?

Usually water from salt, carbs, hormones or a hard workout. It typically settles in a few days.
