How to exercise on a GLP-1

On a GLP-1, exercise matters less for burning calories and more for deciding whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle.

What exercise does on a GLP-1

The drug drives most of the calorie deficit by reducing appetite. Exercise has a different job: protecting muscle, keeping your heart and blood sugar healthy and helping you keep the weight off later.

The FDA labels describe Zepbound and Wegovy as add-ons to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The federal baseline

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend for adults:

  • At least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, such as brisk walking
  • Muscle-strengthening activity on 2 or more days a week

If you are starting from zero, any amount helps. Build up over weeks, not days.

A sample week

DaySessionTime
MondayFull-body strength: squat, push, pull, carry30 to 40 min
TuesdayBrisk walk30 min
WednesdayWalk or easy bike30 min
ThursdayFull-body strength30 to 40 min
FridayBrisk walk30 min
SaturdayLonger walk, hike or sport45 to 60 min
SundayRest or gentle stretching

Track strength with the one-rep max calculator and set walking effort with heart rate zones.

Training with a small appetite

  • Have a small snack with some carbs and protein 1 to 2 hours before harder sessions
  • Drink water before and after; dehydration is a known risk on GLP-1s
  • Keep sessions gentler on the day or two after an injection or dose increase if you feel queasy
  • Stop and rest if you feel shaky, faint or dizzy

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea along with your GLP-1, ask your doctor how to handle low blood sugar around exercise.

What a strength session looks like

A full-body session covers the main movement patterns. Pick one exercise from each line:

PatternBeginner optionNext step
SquatChair sit-to-standGoblet squat with a dumbbell
HingeHip bridgeDumbbell Romanian deadlift
PushWall push-upBench or floor push-up
PullBand rowDumbbell or cable row
CarryGrocery bag walkFarmer carry with dumbbells

Do 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. Rest 1 to 2 minutes between sets. When you can do 12 good reps on every set, add a little weight. Write your numbers down; seeing them climb is one of the best reasons to keep going.

Steps count too

Everyday movement, called NEAT, can add up to hundreds of calories a day. A step goal is an easy way to track it. Convert yours with steps to miles or read walking for weight loss.

When to call your doctor

  • Chest pain, unusual shortness of breath or a racing heart during exercise
  • Fainting or near-fainting
  • Shakiness, sweating or confusion that could be low blood sugar
  • You have heart disease and are starting a new exercise program

Common questions

Do I need to exercise on Zepbound or Wegovy?

The labels describe these drugs as additions to diet and increased physical activity. Exercise, especially strength training, also helps protect muscle while you lose weight.

What is the best exercise on a GLP-1?

A mix works best: strength training at least twice a week to keep muscle, plus regular walking or other moderate cardio for heart health.

Why do I feel weak during workouts?

Eating and drinking less can leave you low on fuel and fluids. A small snack and water beforehand often help; tell your doctor if weakness persists.
