How much protein you need on a GLP-1

In the trial scans, roughly a quarter to two-fifths of the weight people lost on GLP-1 drugs was lean mass, and protein is your main defense.

Clinician review pending Updated

Why protein moves up the list

Fast weight loss takes some muscle with it, whatever method you use. Body scans in the STEP 1 and SURMOUNT-1 trials found lean mass made up a meaningful share of the weight lost.

Eating enough protein and doing strength work are the two habits with the best evidence for keeping more of that muscle. See muscle loss on a GLP-1.

How clinicians set a range

The basic adult allowance is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. That number was set to prevent deficiency, not to protect muscle during weight loss.

Many clinicians suggest 1.0 to 1.5 grams per kilogram while losing weight, and sports nutrition groups go higher for people who train hard. For people with a lot of weight to lose, the target is often based on goal or adjusted weight instead of current weight.

Kidney disease changes the math, so check with your doctor first if that applies. Get a personal range from the protein calculator.

  1. Not all the weight you lose is fat. In trial body scans, roughly a quarter to two-fifths of weight lost on GLP-1s was lean mass.
  2. Eating enough protein and doing strength training both help protect that muscle while the weight comes off.
  3. A common target while losing weight is 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram a day. At 180 lb that's about 98 to 131 grams.
  4. Split it across meals. About 30 to 45 grams at each of three meals is far easier than catching up at night.

Spread it across the day

Your body uses protein best in steady doses. A common approach is 25 to 35 grams per meal, plus a protein snack if your total is high.

On a GLP-1, eat the protein first. If you fill up after a few bites, you want those bites to count.

Shakes and bars

When appetite is very low, a protein shake can fill the gap. Whey and soy protein powders often provide 20 to 25 grams per scoop, but this varies by brand.

Look for products with third-party testing and modest added sugar. Treat them as a top-up, not the base of your diet.

A 100-gram day, two ways

Here is how about 100 grams of protein can fit into small meals, using the approximate values above.

BreakfastGreek yogurt (20 g) with berriesGreek yogurt (20 g) with chia
Lunch3 oz tuna (20 g) on whole-grain toast1 cup lentil soup (18 g)
Snack2 eggs (12 g)1 cup edamame (18 g)

Vegans can swap dairy for soy yogurt, soy milk and extra tofu or tempeh, though plant proteins often come with more volume per gram, which matters when you fill up fast.

When to call your doctor

  • You can't reach even half your protein target for more than a week or two
  • You have kidney disease and plan to raise your protein
  • You notice weakness, falling strength or trouble with stairs

Common questions

How many grams of protein should I eat on Zepbound or Wegovy?

There is no label number. Many clinicians suggest 1.0 to 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight per day while losing weight; your doctor or dietitian should set your target.

Is a protein shake a good idea on a GLP-1?

It can help when appetite is low. Choose a third-party tested product and use it to top up meals, not replace them.

Can too much protein be harmful?

For most healthy adults, intakes in the ranges above are considered safe. People with kidney disease should ask their doctor before raising protein.

Should I base protein on current or goal weight?

For larger bodies, many clinicians use goal or adjusted body weight so the target is realistic. Our protein calculator shows both.
