DefinitionYo-yo dieting, or weight cycling, is a pattern of losing weight and then regaining it, repeated over months or years.

What it means

Weight cycling is common. After most diets, the body pushes back with more hunger, lower leptin and a smaller calorie burn, and old habits and surroundings are still there. Many people regain much of what they lost within a few years.

Researchers are still debating whether weight cycling itself harms health. Some observational studies link it with higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart problems, but people who cycle may differ in other ways, so cause and effect are hard to prove. Some studies also link it with binge eating.

The same pattern has been seen with medicines. In GLP-1 trials where people stopped treatment, many regained a large share of the weight they had lost.

Planning for maintenance from the start, including protein, strength training, activity, sleep and a clear plan with your prescriber about long-term treatment, may lower the odds of a full cycle.

Why it matters

Regain after stopping a GLP-1 is common, so weight cycling is part of any honest long-term plan.
