Oral semaglutide

What it means

Peptides are usually broken down in the gut, so swallowing one normally does not work. Oral semaglutide gets around this with an absorption enhancer called SNAC that protects the drug in the stomach and helps a small fraction pass into the blood.

Rybelsus was approved in 2019 for type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill, a higher-dose tablet, was approved in December 2025 for chronic weight management. In the OASIS 4 trial, people taking the 25 mg tablet lost about 13.6% of body weight on average at 64 weeks, compared with about 2.2% on placebo.

Because so little is absorbed, the rules matter. The label says to take it on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other pills.

Tablet and injection doses are not interchangeable. A 25 mg tablet is not stronger than a 2.4 mg shot; it reflects how little of the tablet is absorbed.

Why it matters

The tablet is a real alternative to weekly shots, but only if you can stick to its strict morning routine.
