DefinitionDulaglutide is a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist sold as Trulicity, approved for type 2 diabetes but not for weight management.

What it means

Dulaglutide is made by Eli Lilly and comes in a single-dose pen. The label starts at 0.75 mg once a week and allows increases to 1.5 mg, 3 mg and 4.5 mg, each after at least 4 weeks on the prior dose.

Trulicity is approved to improve blood sugar in type 2 diabetes and to lower the risk of major heart events in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease or risk factors. Some people lose weight on it, but weight loss is not an approved use and average loss in trials was modest.

If you are comparing options for weight, Trulicity belongs in the conversation mainly because insurers may already cover it for diabetes. Ask your prescriber how it compares with weight-approved options for your goals.
