What it means

Mazdutide was discovered by Eli Lilly and licensed to Innovent Biologics for China. Like survodutide, it activates both the GLP-1 and glucagon receptors, and it is often described as an analog of oxyntomodulin, a natural gut hormone that does the same.

China's drug regulator approved it in June 2025 for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition. The approval was based on the GLORY-1 trial in Chinese adults, published in NEJM in 2025.

Mazdutide is not FDA-approved. The FDA has named mazdutide among GLP-1-type products being sold online in the US labeled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption." Products like these have no FDA review of their contents or quality.

Side effects in trials were mostly stomach-related, similar to other drugs in the class.

Why it matters

A drug approved in another country is still unapproved in the US, and US products sold under its name carry real quality risks.
