DefinitionAOD-9604 is an unapproved peptide made from a fragment of human growth hormone, once developed as an obesity drug and now sold online for fat loss.

What it means

AOD-9604 is a modified piece of human growth hormone, the tail end of the molecule. It was designed to keep a possible fat-burning effect of growth hormone without its other actions.

It was tested in people as an obesity drug in the late 1990s and 2000s. Development for weight loss was stopped after larger trials did not show meaningful weight loss compared with placebo.

The FDA lists AOD-9604 among bulk substances nominated for compounding that may raise significant safety concerns. It cited possible immune reactions and said it had identified serious adverse events that may be associated with AOD-9604, though cause was not clear.

AOD-9604 is not FDA-approved for any use. Products sold as "research peptides" have no FDA review of their contents. Sunny Weigh does not provide dosing for unapproved substances.

Why it matters

AOD-9604 was tested as a weight-loss drug and did not succeed, which online marketing often leaves out.
