DefinitionChromium picolinate is a mineral supplement marketed to curb cravings and support blood sugar, but studies show little or no effect on weight.

What it means

Chromium is a trace mineral found in foods such as broccoli, whole grains, meat and some spices. It is thought to help insulin work, which is why it is marketed for blood sugar and sugar cravings.

Clinical trials of chromium supplements for weight loss have found little or no meaningful effect compared with placebo. Its benefits for blood sugar in diabetes are also uncertain.

Chromium deficiency is rare in people who eat a varied diet. At typical supplement doses side effects are uncommon, but rare reports describe kidney or liver problems at high doses. Chromium may interact with diabetes medicines and some thyroid medicines.

If you have diabetes and use a GLP-1 medicine, insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell your prescriber before adding supplements marketed for blood sugar.

Why it matters

Chromium is a common ingredient in 'metabolism' blends, but it does not produce meaningful weight loss.
