What it means

Programs usually include regular sessions on setting calorie and activity goals, self-monitoring, problem solving and coping with setbacks. They can be one-on-one or in groups, in person or by video.

Medicare Part B covers obesity screening and behavioral counseling for people with a BMI of 30 or more. The counseling must be given by a primary care provider in a primary care setting, such as a doctor's office, and people generally pay nothing if the provider accepts assignment. Continued coverage depends on meeting weight-loss requirements.

In the major GLP-1 trials, everyone, including the placebo group, received lifestyle counseling. That is why drug labels describe these medicines as used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.

Private plans vary in what they cover. Ask whether your plan includes behavioral programs, dietitian visits or digital coaching, since some plans require them before approving medicines.

Why it matters

Behavioral support is part of how GLP-1 medicines were tested, and some plans require it for coverage.
