| Formula | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Devine (1974) | 50 kg + 2.3 kg/in | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/in |
| Robinson (1983) | 52 kg + 1.9 kg/in | 49 kg + 1.7 kg/in |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg/in | 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg/in |
| Hamwi (1964) | 48 kg + 2.7 kg/in | 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg/in |
Use a range, not one number
The healthy BMI range (18.5 to 24.9) usually spans 30 lb or more at a given height. A weight you can keep, with good strength, energy and lab numbers, matters more than any single target. Check where you are with the BMI calculator.

Common questions
What is my ideal weight for my height?
The tool shows four formula results and the healthy BMI range. The range is a better guide than any single number.
Why do the formulas disagree?
They were built from different populations for different purposes, mostly medication dosing, so they differ by several pounds.
Does muscle change my ideal weight?
Yes. Muscular people can be healthy above these numbers, which is why body fat is a useful second check.
Do these formulas work under 5 feet?
They were designed for adults 5 feet and taller, so results for shorter heights are less reliable.
